Pre-Season Tournament Test
Kickoff In Topeka

August 3, 2008 - Last year around this time, Shockwave was preparing for their toughest test of the entire season right out of the gate - the KC Legends Invitational in Kansas City.  That weekend, with severe heat and competition to match, set the stage for our team to grow and become a close-knit group.

This year, the tournament moves to Topeka and the heat is not expected to be nearly as brutal, but the competition will remain at a high level.  As we do every year early on, we look to continue building team chemistry and higher level of play than we ended the previous season.

Playing competitive soccer before the school year even begins may be pushing the envelope a bit, but if we look at it as purely a way to evaluate what we need to work on for the upcoming season, a lot of good can come from it.

Tournament Schedule here...

The Shockwave Points Game
It's Okay To Compete

UPDATE:  THE NEW POINTS GAME BEGINS ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 19TH

April 22, 2008 - I've been asked how the points listed to the right work and why we are keeping track.  If, for no other reason, it's because of the shock(wave) value of seeing (or not seeing) your name posted on a list of those who excel at meeting a challenge.  To that end, I will post the top 5 points finishers from each practice along with the overall top 5.  We will award both individual and team points for every activity and game during practice.

As coach Dorrance writes, "Charting was a way for me to coach women without the intensity of my personality. Instead of whipping them verbally, the numbers would be whipping them. It would not be personal. We wanted to create a competitive fury in practice so that once they got into a game it would be like Brer Rabbit in the briar patch. We wanted our kids to feel at home in intense competition."

"So much of what girls have been taught growing up is about cooperation and acquiescence... Girls would rather be accepted and liked than to be competitive and respected. We want the girls in our system to understand that we don't want you to be popular, we want you to be respected."

And, so it begins.  Relatively easy at first - more intense as we continue.

Return to Anson Dorrance Introduction

March 27, 2008 - When Mia Hamm was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame a months back, her coach at UNC was asked to do the introduction speech.

Many have read Anson Dorrance's, The Vision Of A Champion, but this is the first time he puts the whole story into a speech.

His respect and admiration for the world's greatest female soccer player is obvious.

Once again, it's not about the game, it's about the person the game creates...just listen.
